Glastonbury Abbey from Wells

Saturday 21st March 2026 - 12 miles / 7 hours

DSC00418

This walk follows the final stage of the Glastonbury Water Way, starting and finishing in two much-visited pilgrimage centres.  The route skirts the edge of the Somerset Levels, but there are a few hill climbs, so it's a day for the experienced and more energetic walker.  The pilgrimage begins at the medieval masterpiece of Wells Cathedral, with a fairly early start.  Then the walk heads out to climb the viewpoints of Worminster Down and Pilton Hill.  Next the route climbs and traverses Pennard hill, stopping in the village of West Pennard for lunch.

Along the way, the landmark of Glastonbury Tor and its church tower dedicated to St Michael calls us onwards.  In the afternoon the route heads across the levels directly to Glastonbury Tor for the final and steepest climb.  Then it's into Glastonbury to visit some of its holy wells and finish at the famous Abbey and consider some of the legends associated with this place.

There is an option to return to Wells for a service of evensong at the Cathedral.

Cost: £30*.  There is an optional additional cost of £15 to visit the Abbey at the end of the pilgrimage.  For more information visit the Glastonbury Abbey website.  We will use public transport to return to Wells.  Lunch at the Lion Inn, West Pennard.  Lunch and return transport are not included in the price.

Book here for this pilgrimage.

* Please note there is a reduced cost for additional group members.  See here for more details.
