Malmesbury Abbey from Sherston
Saturday 7th March 2025 - 8 miles / 4 hours

Malmesbury has been a spiritual centre since St Aldhelm founded a monastery here in the eighth century and the present abbey church dates back to the Twelfth Century. Malmesbury Abbey is also the burial placel of the tenth century king Athelstan, the first to rule as king of all England. A modern route - the Athelstan Way - connects many of the attractive village churches in this pretty south-eastern part of the Costwolds. Malmesbury also lies close to the Fosse Way, a Roman road built in the first and second centuries to run from Exeter to Lincoln, which has carried pilgrims throughout the intervening years.
We will start the journey in the picturesque Cotswold village of Sherston and travel north and then east on a quiet rural footpaths of the Athelstan Way and the Fosse Way, visiting the villages of Easton Grey and Brokenborough before following alongside a branch of the River Avon to reach the impressive town of Malmesbury, finishing at the Abbey.
We will organise transport back to the start at Sherston.
Cost: £30, to include return travel by taxi. Bring your own lunch.
