Bristol Cathedral from Pill

Saturday 7th March 2025 - 8 miles / 4 hours

IMG 0662

This walk begins in the riverside village of Pill, a point from which pilgrims once sailed to Spain to walk the Camino Ingles to Santiago.  We follow the River Avon trail alongside the river and through the dramatic landscape of the Avon gorge.

After a climb up Nightingale Valley, we traverse the river on the magnificent Clifton Suspension Bridge, before a stop for lunch at the other side.  Then it's into the city for a visit to the Roman Catholic Cathedral of Ss Peter and Paul, and a final descent through some of Bristol's finest streets to College Green and Bristol's Anglican Cathedral.

Bristol Cathedral was formerly the Abbey Church of St Augustine and home to a monastery of Augustinian monks, before becoming a cathedral church after the dissolution of the monasteries.  As the oldest parts of the building, including the 12th century Chapter House, date from the time that the building was a monastery, it qualifies as an Abbey for the purposes of these Lent pilgrimages!  There is an option to stay for a short service of evening prayer at the Cathedral to finish.

Cost: £30.  Return to Pill by public transport.  We will stop for lunch at the Bristol 360 cafe.
