As we start 2026 it feels as though Pilgrim Pathways is finally gathering some momentum and that this could be a much busier year of pilgrimage walking. Here is what is planned for the year...
Lent walks: Following last year's Lent series, this year I have put together a series of weekly walks to historic Abbeys of the West Country and South Wales. It was hard to choose which places to visit, but I've tried to find a balance of different landscapes, a mixture of former monasteries which were once significant centres of pilgrimage but are now picturesque ruins speaking of a former glory, together with Abbeys which have remined in use as places of worship. And we will visit at least one monastery where a community of prayer continues to live an active rhythm of prayer, hospitality and work. You can find out more here.
Virtual Pilgrimages: It's taken longer than it should have done, but now I can offer two programmes of 'virtual' walks along the Camino de Santiago, which you can enjoy without having to leave the comfort of your armchair. These are video-based journeys which reflect on pilgrimage themes and in particular the joys and challenges of the Camino de Santiago French Way. For more information, visit the web page here.
St Cuthbert's Way: This walk is now almost fully booked. As of the end of January I have one place remaining. Because of the interest in this walk, I will seek to offer another St Cuthbert's Way pilgrimage in 2027. If you might be interested in this, please get in touch.
North East walks: After St Cuthbert's Way, I will stay in the North East for a few more day walks. It's a part of the world dear to my heart, the landscape feels very 'thin' with strong resonances from the presence of the Northern Saints and a sense of closeness to heaven. I've chosen a mixture of walks which have proven popular in the past and one or two new routes. There's more information here.
Summer walks: Back in the West of England, I'm planning some longer day walks and shorter ones. I thought it might be quite enjoyable to lead some late afternoon /early evening strolls of just a couple of hours, imagining a rosy glow of warm summer sunshine and finishing off sitting outside to watch the sunset over a well-earned meal at a local pub. Then I'd also like to travel a little further afield from my home near Bristol and lead some new walks to places such as Hereford, Oxford and Worcester cathedrals. The plan will be completed and up on the website by the end of February.
Cotswold pilgrimage: Finally, I will be working with a friend to lead a pilgrimage through the Cotswolds, connecting with local Baptist churches at the end of August and beginning of September. As I am a Baptist minister myself, this is a way of connecting more deeply with some of my colleagues and of strengthening relationships between Christian communities. So I won't be advertising on this website. But if you would like to know more about it, please do get in touch.
I look forward to reporting back on how these walks have been and what I and others have learned from the experience.
