The Angel's Way Pilgrimage

The Angel of the North to Jesmond, Newcastle upon Tyne

Friday 29th May 2026 - 9 miles / 5 hours

Angel of the North

The Angel's Way is one of the Northern Saints Trails, created in 2021 to connect significant spiritual sites across the North East associated with the Celtic era saints, centred on Durham Cathedral.  This route starts at a modern pilgrimage site, the iconic Angel of the North sculpture, and finishes at a quiet and little-known ruined chapel which was once one of the most visited pilgrimage destinations in England.

We start at the Angel of the North and take time to ponder and consider what it evokes within us.  Then we follow an old coal waggonway and city streets to reach the attractive Victorian Saltwell Park.  From here we head into the centre of Gateshead and across Robert Stephenson's High Level Bridge to reach Newcastle's Anglican cathedral and a stop for lunch.

Next we head down to the Quayside with its magnificent bridges spanning the Tyne, then walk along the riverside to the Ouseburn Valley with its trendy shops, bars and businesses.  This takes us to two more attractive city parks - Heaton Park and Jesmond Dene, where we finish at the ancient chapel of St Mary and its nearby holy well, once a major destination for pilgrims.

We will return to the Angel of the North using public transport.

Cost is £30 for individual pilgrims and £20 for additional members of a group.
