Lanchester to Durham
Friday 22nd May 2026 - 12 miles / 6 hours

This walk follows the final stage of the Way of Light pilgrim trail, through the Lanchester valley to Durham cathedral. Lanchester stands on the Roman Dere Street, so its history extends back to the building of a fort here around 150AD. We will start the journey at the Twelfth Century All Saints Church and walk through a varied landscape influenced by farming, coal mining and communities of faith.
The route offers nature reserves alongside the River Browney, climbs which give panoramic views and several historic and significant spiritual sites, including the impressive complex of Ushaw College, a former seminary for Catholic priests. We follow a green corridor into Durham and arrive in time to look around this great place of worship and prayer, built around the shrine of St Cuthbert. There is an option of staying on for a service of choral evensong. Return to Lanchester is by public transport.
The cost of this walk is £40 for single pilgrims and £20 for additional members of a group. Bring your own lunch or purchase one when we stop at the cafe of Ushaw College.
