St Cuthbert's Cave to Holy Island

Saturday 23rd May 2026 - 10 miles / 6 hours

Slide73

This route follows the final stretch of the St Cuthbert's Way pilgrimage trail.   We start at the natural rock outcrop of St Cuthbert's Cave, a place where the saint is believed to have stayed overnight on his missionary travels.  It is a dramatic and inspiring place surrounded by a plantation of trees.  We climb up to the ridge of hills above the cave, where the pilgrim trail gets its first sight of Holy Island and then walk through forests and farmland and a couple of small villages to reach the coast at Beal.

Then we walk across the sands on the pilgrim causeway onto the island, following in the footsteps of centuries of pilgrims, which is always a memorable and moving experience.  Once on he island, we will make our way to the Priory to finish at the site of the Benedictine monastery.  There is time to explore the island before a meal together and return to the car park at St Cuthbert's Cave.  Transport for this will be provided.

Cost for this pilgrimage is £50, to include admission to Lindisfarne Priory.  Cost for additional group members in a party is £30.
